New Priority Occupation List – PMSOL Update

September 04, 2020

On 2 September 2020, the Acting Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, the Hon Alan Tudge MP announced the introduction of a new priority skills list (‘PMSOL’).

 

This will allow skilled workers in specific occupations to gain a travel exemption to travel to Australia. However, the mandatory quarantine period of 14 days will still apply on arrival.

Medicare Information for Migrants

Medicare is the system provided by the Australian Government which provides free or lower cost medical services.

 

It provides access to benefits for a range of health services, lower cost prescriptions and free care as a public patient in a public hospital. It pays for all or some of the costs of necessary health care all over Australia. It does not pay for all medical services. It is therefore important that visitors to Australia understand Medicare and whether they are eligible to apply for Medicare.

New Regional Visas with Pathway to Permanent Residency

On 16 November 2019, the government will launch the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) and the Skilled Employer Sponsored (Provisional) visa (subclass 494).

Adult Migrant English Program

The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP), funded by the Australian Government, provides up to 510 hours of free English language tuition to eligible migrants and humanitarian entrants.

AMEP is offered in tailored streams designed to meet the specific learning needs and goals of newly arrived migrants.

New Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa 2019

The Australian government recently announced that applications to sponsor a parent under a Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 870) will open on the 17 April 2019.

 

This will provide a new pathway for parents to temporary reunite with their children in Australia. It is geared at offering an alternative to the lengthy and expensive visas currently on offer to migrant’s parents.

Significant changes to Partner Visas in 2019

The Australian Parliament passed the Migration Amendments (Family Violence and Other Measures) Bill 2016 on the 28th November 2018.

 

The government cites the reason for the changes to be the improvement of the management of family violence in the delivery of the family visa program and the protection of visa applicants.

New Visa Announced - Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa

March 18, 2018

On Sunday 18th March 2018, the Australian Government introduced a new temporary work visa – the subclass 482 Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa.

The Migration Legislation Amendment (Temporary Skill Shortage Visa and Complementary Reforms) Regulations 2018 repealed the subclass 457 visa.
