Minimum points to enter the SkillSelect pool
Age range scoring the highest points
Max points — skilled employment experience
Max points — educational qualifications
Sixty-five points is the minimum score to submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect, but that threshold only qualifies an EOI to sit in the pool; it doesn't guarantee an invitation. Invitation rounds in 2026 have regularly required scores well above the 65-point floor for many occupations, so a competitive strategy usually means identifying every point available, not just meeting the minimum.
Points are drawn from age (highest for applicants between 25 and 32), English language ability (Competent English satisfies the visa requirement, but additional points are only available at higher levels), skilled employment experience (a combined maximum of 20 points across overseas and Australian work) and educational qualifications (a further maximum of 20 points, based on your highest qualification only). Partner skill qualifications, a completed Professional Year and other smaller factors can also add points and small differences here often decide whether an EOI clears an invitation round.
If your occupation only appears on the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) or the Regional Occupation List (ROL) rather than the MLTSSL, the 189 isn't available to you directly and state nomination through the subclass 190 or 491, or an employer sponsored pathway through the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), becomes the relevant alternative.
Skilled professionals who want unrestricted permanent residence with no obligation to live in a particular state or regional area and who are prepared to compete on points rather than rely on a sponsor.
This visa suits applicants with occupations commonly represented in recent invitation rounds, such as nursing, teaching, engineering, ICT and select trades, though eligibility always depends on your specific occupation sitting on the current MLTSSL rather than a general sense that your field is in demand.
