Getting a Temporary Graduate Visa in Australia

Visa News

The Temporary Graduate Visa is an excellent option for international students who have finished their studies at an Australian university and want to stay in Australia.

The visa allows you to work in Australia for up to four years, so it’s perfect if you’re looking for a way to gain Australian work experience and earn money while also experiencing the country’s culture.

Suppose you’re considering applying for a temporary graduate visa in Australia (subclass 485). In that case, there are several things that you need to know: which migration agent to contact in Australia, how much it costs, what kind of documents you’ll need, and how long it takes to get approved.

As expert migration agents in Australia, we will walk you through the process of getting a temporary graduate visa in Australia in this post below.

What is a Temporary Graduate Visa?

Students who have had a student visa during the previous six months (unless applying from off-shore) may apply for the Australia Graduate Temporary (Subclass 485) Visa.

The government has introduced this visa to allow students to gain valuable work experience in Australia before they apply for permanent residence.

Graduate Temporary Visa holders are granted temporary residency and work authorization in Australia for 18 months to 4 years. As of December 1, 2021, visa validity periods were extended temporarily to 24 months. Under this program, two main categories of visas are granted:

This visa is usually granted with 18 months duration. It generally requires completion of relevant studies and skills assessment with occupation on the Medium to Long-term Skill Shortages List; however, temporary relaxations are in place. The Australian government will have more updates on this soon.

This visa is granted for two, three or four years, depending on your qualification level (Bachelor, Master or PhD). An applicant must have held a student visa after 5 Nov 2011. Time periods will soon be increased for selected degrees in areas of skill shortages. More government announcements are to come in 2023.

This is a relatively new subclass 485 visa for COVID affected 485 holders. It replaces a visa previously held to give recent Australian graduates more time in Australia.

This visa is for eligible applicants whose first 485 Post-Study work visa was granted on the basis of study and living in an eligible designated regional area. Applicants must currently or previously have lived, worked and studied in the designated regional area for the previous two years and declare a further intention to live, work and study in a designated regional area.

This visa is similar to the requirements of the second Post-Study Work visa but allows for a third visa when the applicant has held a Replacement Stream visa in addition to the first Post-Study Work visa.

The applicant must have lived, worked and studied only in a regional area in the previous two years.

Grant circumstances are the same as the second Post-Study Work visa – either one or two years from the Replacement visa, depending on where the regional study was done on the first visa and where the applicant lived, worked and studied on the Replacement visa.
