Skills Assessment for Skilled Migration

Many of our clients have found the skills assessment process a daunting experience. The reason for that is that there is no one definite rule that one needs to follow to have their skills assessed. The process and the requirements will depend on the type of qualification you wish to have assessed. To maximise your chances of a successful skills assessment, it is important that you do it correctly. This article will cover some important points to help you prepare for your skills.

What is a Skills Assessment?

In order to meet the Points Test for Skilled Migration at the time of invitation you, must nominate an occupation from the relevant skilled occupation lists (SOL or CSOL). For the nominated occupation to be considered there must be evidence that your skills have been assessed by the relevant assessing authority. The evidence will include a full (permanent) skills assessment.

Can all skills be assessed?

The good news is that both Australian and Overseas skills and qualifications can be considered for assessment. In almost all cases, assessing authorities will require the evidence of post-secondary qualifications in order to qualify for a grant of a positive skills assessment of your skills.

In a limited number of occupations, substantial work experience can be considered.

What is required for Skills Assessment?

There is no one size that fits all when it comes to Skills Assessment.

The requirements for Skills Assessment are determined by each individual assessing authority in accordance with relevant professional standards.

Please note, that the assessment has an expiry date which will be specified on the assessment.

Some assessing bodies issue a provisional assessment for recent graduates of Australian educational institutions who are applying for a subclass 485 visa.

This assessment is not a suitable skills assessment for a Points Tested Skilled Migration Visa.

For health practitioners, the Department of Home Affairs will accept the following certificates issued by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as evidence of full registration: full/unconditional/general medical registration and conditional specialist.

For legal practitioners, evidence of admission to practice as a lawyer in the relevant State or Territory is considered a suitable skills assessment.

Who can assess my skills?

The type of assessing authority you need to use will depend on your nominated occupation. The Department of Home Affairs provides a complete list of the relevant assessing authority for each occupation on SOL or CSOL.

Did you know that it’s also possible you could consider skills assessment in a number of different occupations to find the correct or the best pathway to your permanent residency?

Although you can only nominate one occupation when you lodge your Points Tested Skilled Migration application before you submit your Expression of Interest via SkillSelect you may apply to any number of skills assessing authorities until you obtain a positive skills assessment. You will be unable to change your nominated occupation once you are invited to apply for a Points Tested Skills Migration visa.

It is your responsibility to contact the relevant assessing authority for your nominated occupation and apply in order to obtain a skills assessment. If you are not sure or your pathway is not clear it is good to get some advice on the best pathway to use. Our team offers a range of skills assessment advice services. We can run a skills assessment consultation for you where we answer all your questions and help you determine the right skills assessment pathway or we can contact the relevant assessing authority to arrange your skills assessment on your behalf.  Book a consultation today with one of our specialists to get your assessment underway.
